"No better instrument has been devised for arriving at truth than to give a person in jeopardy of serious loss notice of the case against him and opportunity to meet it. Nor has a better way been found for generating the feeling, so important to a popular government, that justice has been done."
~ U.S. Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter
Domestic Criminal Offenses
What is a domestic crime?
Domestic crime refers to any crime committed against a family member or intimate relation, and most domestic crimes fall under the "domestic violence" category.
Examples of domestic crimes:
- Kidnapping
- Sex crimes
- Child Abuse
- Stalking
- Assault and Battery
- Harrassment
- Emotional Abuse
- Neglect
Who commits domestic violence?
Domestic violence occurs in several relationship types: romantic partners, parent/child, and caregiver/dependent.
The most prevalent type of domestic crime between partners is abuse, emotional and/or physical. Domestic crime laws no longer just protect spouses: domestic partners, and even dating couples now fall under these laws.
Willful neglect is a prominent domestic crime committed by parents against their child(ren). This is usually found with parents who do not provide adequate living conditions or leave their minor children without an adult for extended periods of time.
Caregivers, whether a family member or hired help, can also be guilty of domestic crimes. Typically these involve physical neglect, if not even abuse.
Juvenile Crime & Justice
Virginia defines juvenile crimes as offenses involving persons under the age of eighteen years of age. The emphasis of juvenile justice is placed upon treatment and rehabilitation of a juvenile offender rather than on punishment, especially in the most common cases. Legal representation
is extremely important to ensure the charges do not follow your child into adulthood, as well as to prevent him/her from having to appear in adult court.
Common types of juvenile offenses:
- Trespassing
- Property theft
- Vandalism
- Drug or drug paraphernalia possession
- Assault
- Minor possession (alcohol)
- Curfew violation
- Truancy
There are many alternatives that should be considered when a juvenile has been adjudicated deliquent. Thomas & Thomas Law is prepared to effectively defend juvenile criminal charges and zealously promote an appropriate dispostion specifically tailored for your case.
